Boris de Klerk - Spielplatz
(nl)

Boris de Klerk approaches a space as a composer. Central to his work is the act of approaching a space from a composer's perspective. He starts from the premise that silence never truly exists and that sound cannot be understood in isolation from the place where it resonates. To him, the sound of air conditioning, footsteps, a voice, or the soft hum of a dimmer switch ranks no lower in the hierarchy than a musical instrument. It is often these barely perceptible sounds that give a space its character. Rather than letting the visual take the lead, he seeks to draw the audience into a reality where listening comes before seeing.
Boris de Klerk creates performances, music, installations, and set designs. Sound, improvisation, and technology form the common thread running through all these media. Much art that engages with technology explicitly seeks to create experiences through new interfaces, virtual realities, or screens. His interest, however, lies in what happens once technology has become commonplace. He works with systems that have lost their novelty: fluorescent lighting, dimmers, microphones, speakers, electrical wiring, and software designed primarily to operate in the background. He seeks to render this seemingly neutral infrastructure strange again—not by rejecting the digital, but by returning it to its material fundamentals: electricity, vibration, light, heat, noise, latency, and the physical presence of an audience in a shared space.
