Emke idema & marie groothof - the big turning

(nl)

Emke Idema is theatermaker.

Emke Idema is a theatre maker. Her work is exploratory in nature and takes various forms, ranging from a life-sized board game to text or audio drama. Her work is often interactive, allowing the audience to experience the role they themselves play in shaping the world. Recently, her focus has shifted to public space, nature, the body, and the non-rational.

Marie Groothof is a mime artist, maker, and writer. In her work, she explores how the body, language, and imagery can shift our perception. She writes scripts, was a member of the theatre collective Schwalbe, and has worked as a performer with artists such as Jetse Batelaan, Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot, and Susanne Kennedy.

Idema and Groothof met at the Schrijversvakschool (School for Writers). Drawing on their respective areas of expertise, they developed the ‘School of Unlived Worlds’ in 2021. Their explorations there evolved into a desire to create an intervention in urban public space: ‘The Big Turning’.

‘The Big Turning’ is an audio performance set in a city square. As a member of the audience, you are asked to take up various positions within the square: first at the edge—seated or standing—and then out in the open space, slowly turning on your own axis. The way you move through the square shapes your perception. How does the city take form when you aren't simply moving from A to B? What happens to time when you are constantly looking in every direction? How do the present, past, and future relate to one another here? What is the mystery of this place? The spoken text inspires these shifts in perspective.
