KAN
(nl)

Zo bouwt KAN zichzelf.
The akademie has many entrances without doors
The akademie builds itself on local ground, stories, imagination
The akademie is a walk that connects
The akademie needs a cantine
The akademie is activated when someone is present
The akademie communicates through the buurt newspaper
The akademie asks questions but doesn’t require answers
The akademie works from what is already there
The akademie is ready when it is asked for
The akademie is in search. Of art. Of knowledge. Of each other.
The akademie is blue and read and yellow.

KAN (Kunst Akademie Nazareth) is a collective artistic inquiry into what an academy can mean and offer to a community today. Within the Academy, traditional roles become fluid: anyone can be a teacher, a student, a researcher, or a host. The project is developed by a core team of five artists, each bringing a distinct background and artistic discipline: Nena Hartog, Olivia Reschofsky, Alice Pons, Gert-Jan Stam, and Layla Önlen. KAN is an initiative of SoAP Maastricht.

KAN is an art academy in the making, located in the Nazareth neighborhood of Maastricht and developed for and with its residents. We host open days, invite people to share their knowledge and curiosity, and share our own in return. We are present once a week, participating in classes on Arabic calligraphy, website development, and general knowledge about the Netherlands. In this way, KAN builds itself.
