Elioa Steffen is een kunstenaar en onderzoeker die werkt binnen performance, schrijven en sociale praktijk. Haar/hen werk bevindt zich op het snijvlak van gemeenschappelijke verhalen, culturele normen en systemisch geweld. De kern van haar/hen praktijk is een zoektocht naar een queer gevoel van verbondenheid – een poging om zich te verhouden tot anderen en tot de wereld buiten de normatieve structuren die we hebben geërfd. Steffen werkt vaak in samenwerkingsverbanden en verkent uiteenlopende thema’s, waaronder de transvrouwelijke stem in religieuze extase, de pedagogische mogelijkheden van waanzin en vormen van queer artistieke feedback. Ze/hen is afgestudeerd aan DAS Theater.
Psalm for the Monstrous is een lecture-performance die de culturele betekenis onderzoekt van de gelijknamige transkomedie-dramaserie, tien jaar na de stopzetting ervan. De performance belicht de radicale manier waarop Psalm for the Monstrous het leven van trans personen verbeeldde, en benadrukt zowel de artistieke verbeeldingskracht als de spanning tussen realisme en fantasie in de serie.
Tijdens de lezing wordt het publiek meegenomen achter de schermen en uitgenodigd tot reflectie op de complexe, vaak tegenstrijdige en controversiële, maar nooit saaie creatieve praktijk en de fatale tekortkomingen van de maker van de serie, Magziek Ainwirk. Daarnaast wordt stilgestaan bij de kleurrijke levens – en soms tragische eindes – van enkele van de meest markante castleden.

Elioa Steffen is an artist and researcher working within performance, writing, and social practice. Her/them work sits at the intersection of shared narratives, cultural norms, and systemic violence. At the core of her/them practice is a search for a queer sense of belonging—an attempt to maintain connection to others and to the world beyond the normative structures we have inherited. Steffen often works in collaborative settings and explores diverse themes, including the transfeminine tribe in religious ecstasy, the pedagogical potential of madness, and forms of queer artistic feedback. She/them is a graduate of DAS Theater.
Psalm for the Monstrous is a lecture-performance that examines the cultural significance of the eponymous trans comedy-drama series, ten years after its cancellation. The performance highlights the radical way in which Psalm for the Monstrous depicted trans lives, and indirectly both the artistic imagination and the tension between realism and fantasy within the series.
During the lecture, the audience will be taken behind the scenes and invited to reflect on the complex, often contradictory and controversial, yet never dull, creative practice and the fatal flaws of the series' creator, Magziek Ainwirk. The lecture will also explore the colorful lives—and sometimes tragic endings—of some of the most striking castles.
