Johannes Bellinkx & Benjamin Vandewalle - a mass on the move

(nl)

Benjamin Vandewalle studeerde in 2006 af aan P.A.R.T.S.

Johannes Bellinkx was educated as a social geographer and physical performer. His work questions our perceptive systems and the (re)construction of our surroundings. Balancing between performance, live cinema, visual and sound art, he designs experiences that make philosophical, political or cultural insights tangible, such as ‘Reverse’, in which audiences walk backwards through the city.

Benjamin Vandewalle graduated from P.A.R.T.S. in 2006. The central theme in his work is perception, creating movement in both performer and spectator. In recent years, his research has shifted to the relational, exploring how we perceive others and connect with each other more authentically and deeply.

‘A Mass on the Move’ is a participatory performance in the city, in which we explore what happens when we slow down, soften and connect with one another and our surroundings. In a society that strives for speed, efficiency and achievement, we propose another kind of action: a collective exercise in being. We inhabit the city vulnerably and attentively, disrupting the usual going on in a street in a soft way.

We move as a collective body, like a flock of birds. There is no stage and nobody to watch; the people taking part are the work.

The work began here in Maastricht, with a first series of tests in November 2025. Since then we have developed it with participants in Graz, Hasselt, Brussels, Heerlen and Copenhagen. It is still in creation, and everyone who takes part helps to shape it. What we keep finding, in every city, is how little it takes for strangers to trust each other and to feel one with the group.
