Layla Önlen is verhalenverteller, performer en theatermaker. Op latere leeftijd ontdekte ze haar roeping in het theater. Na een intensief traject van coaching, repetities en voorstellingen studeerde ze in 2023 af aan de Toneelacademie Maastricht, gevolgd door een tournee door Turkije en Irak. Ze ziet zichzelf als een reizend atelier: haar artistieke praktijk vertrekt vanuit de overtuiging dat kunst kan transformeren, zowel maker als publiek. Door autobiografische elementen te combineren met universele thema’s, creëert ze werk dat uitnodigt tot ontmoeting en dialoog.
Layla’s werk beweegt zich op het snijvlak van theater, performance en beeldende kunst. In haar experimentele onderzoek Navelband verdiept ze zich in de kracht van materiaal, met name het rode lint. Ze onderzoekt hoe rituelen en herinneringen een collectieve resonantie kunnen krijgen. Intuïtief en multidisciplinair werkt ze zowel individueel als met groepen, in black boxes, publieke ruimtes en de natuur. Haar praktijk is een voortdurende zoektocht naar wat ons verbindt, zonder de eigenheid te verliezen. Het rode lint fungeert als rode draad in haar artistieke traject: elk nieuw project bouwt voort op het vorige, en ze is nog lang niet uitgelint.

Layla Önlen is a storyteller, performer, and theatre maker. Later in life, she discovered her calling in theatre. After an intensive program of coaching, rehearsals, and performances, she graduated from the Maastricht Theatre Academy in 2023, followed by a tour of Turkey and Iraq. She sees herself as a traveling studio: her artistic practice stems from the belief that art can transform both creators and audiences. By combining autobiographical elements with universal themes, she creates work that invites encounter and dialogue.
Layla's work occupies the intersection of theatre, performance, and visual arts. In her experimental research, Navelband, she explores the power of material, particularly the red ribbon. She investigates how rituals and memories can resonate collectively. Intuitively and multidisciplinary, she works both individually and with groups, in black boxes, public spaces, and nature. Her practice is an ongoing search for what connects us, without losing its individuality. The red ribbon serves as a common thread in her artistic trajectory: each new project builds on the previous one, and she is far from finished with ribbons.
